My Cosmology pt1

I've been reading and looking at all the different goddesses and what sits well with me is that there is one supreme being.

She is mother.

Let's call her mother but a primordial vastness, like a black ooze, not a shapely goddess that we see of today but more a primordial being.

And the goddesses we have today were just humans and other ethereal beings on earth, with and without a magickal essence, who were worshipped in their own timeline, in their own space that we can connect to and work with. We work with these goddesses, but I am in devotion to the primordial.

(Source Energy)

The primordial Mother is not a woman in human form. She is older than form itself. A vast, dark, living presence. Something closer to the deep generative mystery from which everything emerges, before language, before mythology, before the division into named gods and goddesses.

And then there are the goddesses.

Isis. Inanna. Brigid. Hecate. Oshun. Sekhmet. Aphrodite. The Morrígan. And countless others. Whether they were historical women later mythologised, spiritual beings, archetypal forces, or some combination of those things, we can work with them. We can honour them. We can learn from them. We can build relationship with them.

But  my devotion is directed towards the One Mother from whom all these expressions arise.

I think the image of primordial blackness is important. Not darkness as evil. More like the darkness of the womb, the deep ocean, the space before stars, the unseen from which form comes into being. A black, living vastness that contains everything before it differentiates into anything.

The named goddesses, in this understanding, are almost like rivers flowing from an immeasurable ocean. You can meet the river. You can drink from it. You can follow its particular current.

But the river is not the whole ocean.

In 50, 60, 100 years' time, who are we going to have on our altars as goddesses? Who is it going to be? We don't have Kuan Ying and Hecate and Iyana. So who are the goddesses of today that are going to be on the altars?

If we look at the ancient world, many of the goddesses we now approach as divine were once connected to actual cultures, actual people, actual places and actual histories. Some may have been entirely mythological. Some may have begun with real women whose stories grew over generations. Some may have been local spirits or forces of nature that became personified.

But the process continues.

Who are we creating now?

Not necessarily through a formal declaration of divinity. Perhaps through the way a person lives, what they embody, what they awaken in others, and whether their story continues after them.

In a hundred years, could people have altars to:

The Mother of Liberation, someone whose life changed the possibilities available to women and girls.

The Mother of the Earth, someone who gave her entire life to protecting the living world.

The Mother of Refugees, someone who became a symbol of care, welcome and the preservation of human dignity.

The Mother of the Unheard, someone who gave language to people who had been silenced.

The Mother of Healing, someone whose work changed how humanity understood the body, the mind or trauma.

The Mother of Resistance, someone who stood against an empire, a system or a violence that seemed impossible to challenge.

And perhaps they won't be famous people at all.

Perhaps there is a woman living now whose name we will never know, who cares for hundreds of children, protects a piece of land, preserves a language, carries a community through war, or spends her whole life tending to the vulnerable. Maybe in 2126, people will tell stories about her. Maybe they'll place flowers before her image. Maybe her life will become myth.

For me, The primordial Mother is eternal.

The goddesses are continually arriving.

The Mother is the source.

So perhaps the question is not only which goddesses will we worship in the future?

It is also:

Which women alive today are already becoming sacred through the way they live?

In my/this cosmology, the future goddess is not necessarily waiting to be discovered in ancient texts.

She may be alive now.

For example take Greta Thunberg, as she continues her life trajectory and then she dies and people tell stories about her and what she campaigned for and what she did. She'll end up being a goddess on someone's altar.

As Greta continues her life's work. She becomes an elder. She dies. Her campaigns become part of history. The climate crisis becomes something future generations study. Stories emerge about the young girl who stood alone outside parliament with a sign, and how that act grew into a global movement.

Over generations, the details change.

The historical person becomes a story.

The story becomes a symbol.

The symbol becomes a figure people relate to.

People begin to invoke her when speaking about the Earth, courage, truth-telling and the responsibility of one generation to another.

Eventually, someone might create an image of her. Someone might light a candle before it. Someone might pray to her, or ask for courage to speak truth to power.

And there she is.

A goddess.

Not because the primordial Mother suddenly decided, “This human is now divine.” Rather, because humanity has recognised something sacred in her life and has continued to carry that recognition forward.

Goddesshood becomes an ongoing human relationship with the sacred.

And I wonder whether there is also something beautiful in the idea that we might be living alongside future goddesses now.

Not knowing which of us will be remembered.

Not knowing which acts will become legend.

Not knowing which ordinary woman, whose name may currently be known only to her community, will become the ancestor or goddess of a future people.

The primordial Mother is the deep source.... And humanity keeps giving her new faces.
